Winter's coming! Get your car prepared for winter with these easy tips: Ways To Winterize Your Car

7 Ways To Winterize Your Car

Now that the chilly months are knocking at the door, it is time to prepare not only yourself but your car as well. I drove a Kia Sorento last winter, and it was great to have a SUV to plow through all of our snow storms. Winterizing your car is a great way to make sure it is reliable during the winter months, plus it helps save you money by avoiding preventable damage due to the elements. If you are unsure about where to begin, take a look below at 7 ways to winterize your car. When you winterize your car, you can be sure you enjoy a safe winter!

1. Get an oil change.

You should be getting your oil changed every 3,000 miles. If not, now is the time to get a thorough change. Oil will change consistency as the weather gets cooler, so it is important to keep fresh oil in your car. Plus, most oil changes come with other perks as well such as fluid refills and break light checks.
2. Replace your windshield wipers.

Test your windshield wipers to be sure they are functioning properly. If they are more than a year old, they should be replaced. Opt for blades that are designed for ice and snow so they wear well with the elements.

3. Test your battery life/Carry jumper cables

Visit a local automotive center to have your car battery tested. You want to be sure it is holding optimum power so it starts up easily during the frigid months. Be sure it is free from corrosion or build up as well. While you are at it, be sure you have a pair of jumper cables in your car should the battery give out. Don’t have jumper cables? Grab a good, solid pair of SUPER HEAVY DUTY 500 amp 6 gauge No Tangle Battery Booster cables 12 feet with FREE travel case Jumper Cables Extra long 12ft.

4. Rotate tires, add snow tires if necessary.

It is wise to rotate tires at this time and even add snow tires if you live in especially rough conditions. If you live in an area that gets a fair amount of snow, snow tires may help you navigate the roads a little easier. Get the tools you need here, and save yourself some money by rotating your own tires.

5. Refill all fluids including antifreeze.

Check all of the fluids in your car especially the antifreeze. Your car needs this fluid to get through the cold months, so flush the old fluid and add new.

6. Check belts, hoses, and lights.

All of your belts, hoses, and lights should be tested to be sure they are functioning properly. These are small items that tend to get ignored, but losing the function of just one can be dangerous. A local auto center can check these items for you and replace them if necessary.

7. Properly examine and inflate tires.

Now is the time to check the treads on your tires. Make sure they are still in good condition and not in need of replacing. With ice and snow on the streets, you also want to be sure you have your tires properly inflated. By doing so, you can maintain traction and avoid slipping and sliding. Be sure your tires have the proper amount of air so they can work their best.

The snow is on its way, so be sure you try these 7 tips for winterizing your car.
