Detroit: FREE Money Matters Workshop Event

Here on AMFOS we love to talk about ways to save money and share frugal tips. Like many of you, I had to learn how to save money and be frugal the hard way. Growing up, money matters wasn’t a huge priority in our household. My Father was a saver, and my Mother was the spender. When I look back at those moments now, I wish more time would have been spent on learning how to save and be savvy with my money. I also wish more classes and education in the classroom would have been given to students to help them prepare for life.

Chevrolet feels the same way.

In fact, they are devoted to offer financial literacy classes and assist participants in developing concrete steps towards financial security. These FREE workshops are put on by the Rainbow PUSH Coalition and Chevrolet to educate African Americans consumers on being smart and savvy with their money.

The goal of this program is to help African Americans understand credit, share the benefits of long-term management, understand college financing, and offer helpful insights on entrepreneurship and establishing a personal brand.

These workshops are being held all over the United States, particularly in the urban locations.

Here’s a look at the 2016 schedule:

  • Chicago, IL – June 24 at the Rainbow PUSH National Headquarters
  •  Harlem, NY – September 10 at the Harlem Commonwealth Council (361 West 125th St., New York, NY 10027)
  • Detroit, MI – October 1 at Wayne County Community College (Frank Hayden Room, 801 W. Fort Street, Detroit, MI 48226)
  • Atlanta, GA – October 22 at Morehouse College (specific location tbd)
  • Washington D.C. – November 12 at Howard University (specific location tbd)
  • Oakland, CA – December 3 at Abyssinian Baptist Church (specific location tbd)

My husband is the spender and I am the saver. My kids are so expensive. Every time I turn around they need money for something else. It could be new sports equipment, an event at school or new shoes. It never ends.

I had to learn the hard way also when it came to money. I am now frugal with money, but it took me a long time to get there.

That is a wonderful workshop idea. I wish that finances/money management was taught in high school so that kids can be better prepared. It is great that they are offering this free for attendees.
