Freezer Friendly Recipes: Easy Salisbury Steak

 Easy Salisbury Steak

Easy Salisbury Steak Right from Your Freezer

When I was a kid, my mom would make Salisbury steak from tv dinners on nights where she didn’t have time to cook a homemade meal.  I loved Salisbury Steak night.  Instead of buying it at the store from the freezer section though, I figured out how to make it from scratch to not only improve the flavor, but keep it a bit healthier and control the salt content.  I often top Easy Salisbury Steak with a few sauteed mushrooms that I add some cream to for a great sauce, or even some leftover beef gravy from another dish.  The best thing about Easy Salisbury Steak is that you can make up patties when the meat is on sale, then freeze them for a fast meal later.  I love to make up 3 or 4 pounds of Easy Salisbury Steak and freeze it in premade patties so I have that insurance of dinner in the freezer anytime I need it.

Simple Ingredients Make the Best Easy Salisbury Steak

I start out with fresh ground beef, whatever is on sale, for Easy Salisbury Steak.  The trick is the bread or breadcrumbs, whichever you want to use.  Soaking them in milk, worcestershire sauce, and roasted beef base really spreads the flavor throughout the meat and gives you a tender Easy Salisbury Steak once it’s cooked.  I use a beef base that adds a rich flavor to everything I use it in.  I get it at GFS (Gorden Food Service), but you can find it at most grocery stores in the broth section.

 Easy Salisbury Steak Ingredients

  • 3 lbs ground beef
  • 3 slices bread, crusts removed and crumbled or ¾ C breadcrumbs
  • 2 T Worcestershire sauce
  • 6 T milk
  • 3 T beef base
  • 3 eggs
  • When cooking:
  • 3 onions, sliced thin
  • 2 T olive oil

In a large bowl, place the bread, Worcestershire sauce, milk, and beef base.  Mix well and allow the bread to soak up the liquids.

Add the eggs and whisk with a fork to mix well.

Add the meat and mix until the bread mixture is completely incorporated into the meat.

Allow to set for about 5 minutes and let the flavors mix.

Form into 9-12 patties, depending on your size preference.

Place on a parchment lined baking sheet and freeze until solid.

Wrap individually in wax paper then place in a large plastic zippy bag or freezer container.  Return to freezer until ready to use.

To Cook:

Saute onions 3-4 minutes until they start to turn clear.

Add the frozen meat, allowing to brown on the bottom before turning, about 4 minutes.

Turn over, add ¼ cup water, and cover.  Allow to cook through until no pink remains.

Serve with your favorite sides.

Easy Salisbury Steak in the Slow Cooker

If you are having one of those busy days where even sauteing the meat isn’t going to be possible at the end of it all, layer the Easy Salisbury Steak in your slow cooker and top with some sliced onions and a bit of beef broth.  Cover and set to low for the perfect meal when you come home.  If you’d like gravy, whisk in a little flour just before serving and your gravy will be amazing!  You’ll come home to a perfectly Easy Salisbury Steak.
