Freezer Friendly Recipes: Turkey Burgers

Turkey Burgers from Freezer to Dinner

I love to take advantage of sales in the grocery store, especially on meat.  So when I happened upon a sale for ground turkey that was far less than ground beef, I grabbed some and made amazing Turkey Burgers.  The great thing about Turkey Burgers, besides their deliciousness, is that you can make them up with ground turkey that’s on sale, freeze them, and cook them whenever you like.  You can even bake them when they are frozen, making Turkey Burgers a great weeknight meal.  I freeze up as many as I can make, placing them on a wax paper lined cookie sheet, so once they are frozen, I can pop them into plastic zippy bags for later use.

Toppings for Turkey Burgers

When I make my Turkey Burgers, I usually make them with a wide variety of toppings.  This time, I seasoned the meat as usual, with poultry seasoning, salt, and pepper.  Then I sauteed apples and onions, since it is apple season, to top my burgers.  A smattering of horseradish laced mayonnaise and a couple of slices of sharp cheddar cheese topped off the burgers, which were sandwiched in between two layers of toasted English muffins.  You can’t get much better than that with a burger.  Juicy, lean, and full of flavor, Turkey Burgers can make a fast meal fabulous in minutes.

2 lbs ground turkey

2 t poultry seasoning

½ t salt

½ t pepper

Turkey Burgers Sauce

Topping Suggestions:

sauteed apples and onions

sharp cheddar cheese

horseradish sauce (1 T prepared horseradish mixed with 1 C mayonnaise)

buns or English muffins

Mix the turkey, poultry seasoning, salt and pepper in a large bowl.

Form into 6 patties.

Place on a wax or parchment paper lined baking sheet.

Freeze 2-4 hours, until solid.  Transfer to a labeled plastic zippy bag and place back in the freezer until ready to cook.

To cook, grill, pan fry with 1 T olive oil, or broil until cooked throughout, 5-10 minutes, turning over halfway through.

Top with your favorite toppings.

Seasonings for Turkey Burgers

You can season Turkey Burgers just about any way you like.  I prefer a general seasoning of salt, pepper, and poultry seasoning.  But you don’t have to be limited to just those three seasonings.  Try your favorite barbecue rub for a sweet or spicy combination, or Montreal steak seasoning for something rich and flavorful.  You can even use a combination of Italian seasonings and garlic, then top the burger with mozzarella and marinara sauce for a great Italian Turkey Burger.  The possibilities are endless and with a little planning, you can have a wide variety of Turkey Burgers in your freezer for dinner at a moment’s notice.
