Homemade Apple Crisp is a Perfect Autumn Dessert

Homemade Apple Crisp is one of those homemade dishes that brings back memories for so many people.  Crisp apples, tangy and sweet, combined with a topping of butter, oats, flour, and spices, then baked to perfection and served warm is a family favorite in my house.  I’m always being asked to make Homemade Apple Crisp not only for my family, but also for gatherings, parties, and office carry-ins.  It’s an easy dish to make, and I’m going to give you my secret spice blend for perfect Homemade Apple Crisp.

Finding the Perfect Apples for Homemade Apple Crisp

The perfect batch of Homemade Apple Crisp starts with the perfect apple.  I love going to local orchards and talking to the owners about their apples.  Many orchards have baking apples that they have developed themselves.  If you don’t have a local orchard, there are several varieties that you can find at your local grocery store that work well for Homemade Apple Crisp.  Granny Smith apples keep their shape when you bake them, as do Paula Reds.  Mitzus are also a phenomenal baking apple that has a bit of a bite to them.  Choose an apple that is just a bit sour, as they bake up sweet and delicious in Homemade Apple Crisp.

5 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced evenly

⅔ C butter, softened

1 ⅓ C packed brown sugar

1 C flour

1 C oats

1 t ground cinnamon

1 t ground nutmeg

½ t ground ginger

Heat oven to 375 degrees F.

Place the apples in a 2 qt casserole dish.

Mix the remaining ingredients and sprinkle over the apples.

Bake until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown, about 30 minutes.

Serve warm.

Taking Advantage of Fall Apples for Spring Homemade Apple Crisp

If you live in an area where you can get apples at a great price in the fall, take advantage of the bounty and make Homemade Apple Crisp for your freezer!  I stop at the dollar store and pick up a few aluminum foil pans, make up Homemade Apple Crisp, then wrap them tightly in aluminum foil.  The pans find a home in the freezer, after they are properly labeled, and come spring, I bake one up every so often for a fresh batch of Homemade Apple Crisp, just like it was fall.  I leave the aluminum foil on the top until the apples are thawed in the oven, then bake a bit longer until they are tender and the top is crisp.  It usually takes about an hour, depending on the size of the pan.  It’s perfect for a gathering, or just as a reminder of a beautiful autumn day.  Whether  you bake it now or save it for later, Homemade Apple Crisp is a scrumptious dessert.
