How To Save Money On Halloween Candy

With so many ways to save money on Halloween focused on costumes and parties, the big part of the holiday often gets forgotten: the candy for trick-or-treaters. What are some creative ways you can save on buying this much candy? Here are some ways you can bag savings on this scary staple.

  • Buy in bulk. Does your local grocery store have a bulk foods section? Did you know many stores carry favorites from Snickers to Starburst in the bulk food section? You can often get a lot more in this section that you can in individual bags for a lower price.
  • Buy hard candy instead of chocolate. It is much cheaper and you will be the hero to kids who don’t like or can’t have chocolate.
  • Don’t buy more than you will need. Take a tally of how many Trick-or-Treaters you get this year. Or guess how many you got last year. Buy for that many, only. It’s OK to run out. There will be plenty for the kids, even if they have to skip one house.
  • Buy a kind of candy you don’t care for. If you don’t really like it, you won’t be tempted to eat it and therefore have to run out and get more.
  • Be careful with how much you give out. With all the candy kids will be getting at numerous homes, they don’t need to grab whole handfuls. Limit them to one piece each and your stash will go further.
  • Look online for good deals on bulk candy. Many retailers have bulk candy with free shipping and you can find a great variety as well.
  • Don’t feel pressure to buy name brand. Knock-off chocolate bars are still chocolate, aren’t they?
  • Go with non-candy treats. Pass out coupons from McDonald’s or other fast food places. You can get them at a heavy discount and the money used to buy these usually goes to a good charity as well.

What NOT to do:

  • NEVER make the treats you pass out. They will more than likely end up in the trash by cautious parents. This will just be a waste of money, entirely.
  • Don’t go looking for candy deals at dollar stores. These packages are smaller for the price than they appear.
  • Don’t pass out unwrapped candy like candy corn, chocolate pieces or gummy bears bought in bulk.
