I’m sure we’ve all had our fill of the back to school madness, am I right? Well, now that school has finally started, the mad dash to get ready for school is over, and now comes the real work. And that is – homework, making lunches, after-school activities, sports, PTO meetings, and everything else in between.

As our twins enter into their sophomore year, I’m having bittersweet moments. It’s been happening all summer, but it’s starting to really sink in. I only have TWO more first day of school years with them. That’s it, then their off to college.

When the kids were little, sending them back to school made me do the happy dance. Now as they get older, I’m happy to send them off to school, but I hold them a little closer. One day, it’s going to be the last first day of school, and I know I won’t be ready.

However, in the meantime, I want them to be successful this year in school, and here are some things I implemented over the years to help them have a successful year.

Establish routines and schedules. Although teens will tell you they don’t need a schedule, they don’t need a routine; kids still crave consistency. We still give our boys a bedtime, which includes input on when they think they should go to bed. Teens are still growing, and having an appropriate amount of sleep is crucial to their success.

Create a homework zone. Create a space for your kids to do their homework. It may be in their room, dining room table, office, basement or another part of the house. Make sure it’s a place your kids can work and stay focused.

Get rid of the phones, video games, and gadgets. During the summer months, we have allowed the boys to have a loose schedule on screen time, however, during the school year that changes. They are not allowed to play during the weekdays unless they have no homework, no test to study for, or nothing critical coming up for a class. With high schoolers, they will have quite the load of homework, tests, and college prep work to do, limiting their screen time will be necessary to make sure they have enough time to study.

Be involved in the school. Make it a habit to get involved from day one. Even if you work full-time, you can find ways to be present in your child’s education and the classroom. You can look to volunteer for a school dance, concession stand, or seeing what the teachers may need help with during the year.

Seek help. If you noticed your child is struggling in a particular subject, get them the necessary help right away. You can look for a tutor or ask your child’s teacher about after-school programs.

Be involved at home. Check in with your child(ren) to see what homework they have, and see if they require help. Sit down with them once per week to go over their grades, upcoming tests and projects, and how they feel about school. With high schoolers, they will be studying for the ACT/ SATs, and talking and working with them on a consistent basis will ensure they are ready!

Prep them for success. One of the best things you can do as a parent is to give your kids the tools for confidence. Confidence is something they have to get on their own, but we can do our best to provide them with the necessary tools. Making sure they are dressed for success, which includes hygiene.

AXE understands the importance of having confidence, which is why my boys have used AXE products since they were tweens. From body wash, hair products, and deodorant, AXE is a family favorite. My boys love AXE because of the quality of body wash, and it leaves their skin smooth and smelling good.

I love AXE products because when you live in a house of all boys, good hygiene is a necessity. I’ve never had to worry about AXE’s body wash (or other products) not passing the test, which is why I will continue to buy them!

Sending your kids back to school with the right confidence is vital to their success and growth!

Breakfast is still important. Make sure your kids have good food to give them energy and fuel their day. I require my kids to eat something in the morning. It doesn’t have to be a 5-course breakfast, but they will find something nutritious to eat before walking out the door.

Get your teens involved. It’s important to have teens help with the school paperwork, getting up on their own, making their breakfast, and being an active part of their high school program. This is teaching them life skills, which will help them get ready for the real world.

Attend the meet-the-teacher-night and conferences. Not only is this a great way for your child to meet their teacher, get familiar with the classroom, and connect with their new classmates, this is also for you. And while your child will have a set of new teachers each semester, establishing relationships with all of their teachers is essential to your child’s growth and success.  Do not skip out on conferences. This is a time for YOU to connect with the teacher, especially if your child is struggling in that particular subject. Even if your child is an A+ student, still show up!

Sign up for alerts, email, etc. Most schools are up-to-date with the current technology. To save paper and ensure you’re getting announcements, sign up for emails, text alerts, etc. Be sure to follow your child’s school’s website and social media platforms. There you will find important dates, upcoming events, and last-minute notices.
