5 Ways to Save on Electronics for the Family

Saving money on electronics is important, considering the expense that they can cost a family. Over the years I have found several ways to save on electronics, even if that meant waiting a little bit to get the electronics of my dreams. And with three boys who love to have the latest gadgets (they get it from me), I’m always looking for the best deal! Check out these five ways to save on electronics for the family.

Buy Refurbished

Buying refurbished is always a tricky trade. My advice to you is to buy from a local company that refurbishes electronics because this is an easy way to get ripped off if you buy online. Take the time to look up reviews on the company to make sure they’re legit. I have personally used eBay to buy refurbished electronics. Here in Lansing, I buy and sell electronics and video games to Disc Traders. They are one of the few stores that give fair prices on trades.

Buy on Sale

Places like Meijer and Target are great places to buy your electronics on sale. Typically, these electronic prices are better than buying from an electronic store. Look for ways in which you can double your savings. If you’re in the market for an iPad, the best time to buy one is around Christmas. If you’re also fortunate enough to have a Meijer store in your area, the last few years Meijer has had the BEST sales on iPads around Black Friday. Don’t believe me? Buy Local

As I mentioned before, one of the ways we save money on electronics is by purchasing local. Buying local allows you to walk into a store and see what you want. Also, having someone close by to help you with what you need is a smart move. If something goes wrong with your electronic, you know exactly where you got it from. Best Buy is a great place to go into the store and play around with the electronic device before purchasing it. Also, they have the geek squad and salespersons on hand that are familiar with the latest technology. This can definitely come in handy if you’re stumped or not sure which tablet to buy.

Always Negotiate

No business wants to lose a sale and that’s why it’s important to negotiate a little bit. Negotiating allows you to get the better end of the bargain, while still giving your business to someone else. It doesn’t mean you’re trying to make their business suffer, you just have “saving money” on your mind. You’ll always walk away feeling great about a sale when you take the time to ask if they’ll go even lower. Think of this as a smart business move on behalf of your family. This may be harder to do at a store like Meijer, Target or Best Buy, but it’s definitely something you can try at a locally owned business store. OR if you find a device that has a small scratch on it, has been returned, or a small defect, then there is always room for negotiation!

Sell Your Old Electronics

Some places will allow you to sell them your old electronics in exchange for a pretty stealthy credit. If you’re ready to give up on your old electronics and go new, then go ahead and sell them. You will want to make sure you do the research to ensure you know exactly how much your old electronics are worth. Like I mentioned above, Disc Traders here in Lansing is a great place to sell your old electronics. I have also sold electronics at Target and received the credit on a gift card. Then turned around and used that gift card to buy a new electronic. This is a GREAT way to cash in on your old device and buy a new one. Also, if you have an Apple gadget, you can also sell it back to the Apple store for credit.

Saving money on electronics starts with doing your research and knowing exactly what they’re worth. Never go electronic shopping without having a head full of knowledge about your phone, tablet, or PC. You’ll always save more money when you’re smart about the way you spend. And when all else fails, shopping online through eBay or Amazon are also great places to find deals!

I like your idea about negotiating the price. A lot of places are willing to drop the price if it means getting the sale.
