As the weather turns colder, we all know what happens. Our kids start getting sick, the flu season arrives, and people are hacking and coughing all around you. I have a few tips to help you prep for the cold and flu season, and how to save money on these essentials.

Wash your hands. I know this sounds simple, but it is so effective. Washing your hands at least 20 seconds with soap and water throughout the day helps get rid of germs. I also wash my hands after coming into the house, and I work hard to avoid touching my face and eyes.

Sanitize all the things. Keep a small bottle of sanitizer in your purse or bag. When you go to the grocery store, they have sanitizer wipes for you to wipe down the cart before using it.

A healthy lifestyle is important. Drinking a lot of water per day, eating your vegetables, taking your vitamins, and getting plenty of sleep is important to avoid getting sick.

Stock up on essentials. Even when we do all these things, we still may catch a cold or flu. In that case, be prepared by stocking up on all the essentials from Walmart. When I would get sick, my mom used Vicks products to help relieve the congestion in my chest. I have used those same products with my boys.

Reduce your stress. This is an easier said than done item, but crucial to your health. Having a lot of stress means you have a weaker immune system.

Spray all the things. I keep a nice supply of disinfectant spray in the house. I spray the common areas of our home at least once per day. I also spray after we’ve had guests at our home. I don’t like being sick, so I’m all about doing whatever I can to keep us healthy all winter.

Stay away from sick people. My last tip is also effective. When I hear people hacking and sneezing, I run the other way. When my babies were little, I had a strict rule for guests not coming to our house if they were sick. I still enforce this rule.

Following these tips will help you stay healthy during the winter. Staying healthy is also a way to save money. If you get a cold or the flu, you’re missing work (or staying home to nurse a sick kid), doctor visits, and prescription co-pays.
